Hermes is a harness, not a model — it doesn’t write a line of code itself. So the honest answer to whether it’s good at coding is yes, genuinely, for a specific kind of coding, with the ceiling set entirely by the brain you plug in. Here’s where the line sits.

Hermes is a harness, not a model. It doesn’t write a single line of code itself — the model you plug into it does. So “is Hermes good at coding” really asks two things: does the harness help or hurt coding work, and what brain are you running in it?
Short answer: yes, genuinely good — with the right model behind it — and for a specific kind of coding. Where the line sits is the useful part.
What Hermes adds to coding that a chat window can’t
- It executes. Reads files, writes files, runs commands, opens the result. I’ve had it build working landing pages from a sentence and open them in the preview beside the chat.
- It remembers. Persistent memory means it knows your project, your conventions and last week’s decisions — the context a fresh chat makes you re-explain.
- It keeps what it learns. Solve something hard once and it’s written down as a markdown skill; next time it already knows.
- It runs without you. Cron jobs, /loop and /goal mean iterate-until-the-tests-pass instead of babysitting.

For long, heads-down coding sessions on hard problems, Claude Code is still the better harness — it’s built around the strongest coding model with the most polish, and it’s what I use for building big systems like the Agent OS itself. Hermes’ coding sweet spot is different: agentic coding — build-and-deploy tasks, scheduled site work, code that runs inside larger automations with memory and skills wrapped round it. The landing page at 2am while you sleep, not the gnarly refactor at 2pm while you watch.
