Kimi K3.1 Pro in Hermes: Step-by-Step Setup Guide

A Kimi K3.1 Pro Hermes setup is one of the cheapest ways to get near-Opus coding power inside your own AI agent. Hermes already has a built-in Kimi provider, so setup takes a few minutes. In this guide I’ll walk you through the API key, the exact commands, the one setting that controls your token bill, and how to save it as a reusable profile. The video below shows it running.

Key takeaways

  • Hermes talks to Kimi through the built-in kimi-coding provider.
  • Put your key in ~/.hermes/.env as KIMI_API_KEY.
  • Watch reasoning effort: max uses about 3× the tokens of medium.
  • Save it as a profile so one word starts a Kimi agent. Claim a free strategy session for help.

Why run Kimi K3.1 Pro in Hermes?

Hermes Agent gives you memory, skills, scheduled jobs and tools. The model is the brain you plug in. Kimi K3.1 Pro is a strong brain for the money: Moonshot’s launch post puts it at 65.7 on Terminal-Bench 4.0, just behind Claude Opus 5.5 at 66.4, and it costs $2 in and $10 out per million tokens.

That mix matters for agents. An agent might run for hours, read big files and call tools many times. A cheaper model that still finishes the job keeps those long runs affordable. And with a 1M-token context, Hermes can hold a lot of your project in view at once.

If you want the full model breakdown first — benchmarks, limits and pricing — read my Kimi K3.1 Pro review. This page is just about getting it running in Hermes.

Step 1: Get your Kimi API key

  • Go to the Kimi platform and create an API key.
  • Top up at least $1. Moonshot’s quickstart says K3.1 Pro unlocks after a top-up, and your rate tier depends on how much you’ve topped up in total.
  • Copy the key somewhere safe. Never paste it into a chat or commit it to GitHub.

If you’re in mainland China, Hermes has a separate provider called kimi-coding-cn, which uses KIMI_CN_API_KEY instead.

Step 2: Add the key to Hermes

Hermes reads provider keys from its .env file. Add one line:

# ~/.hermes/.env
KIMI_API_KEY=your-key-here

By default Hermes sends Kimi requests to https://api.moonshot.ai/v1. You only need KIMI_BASE_URL if you want to point somewhere else. The full provider list is in the Hermes docs.

Step 3: Start a chat with Kimi K3.1 Pro

Run this in your terminal:

hermes chat --provider kimi-coding --model kimi-k3.1-pro

That’s it. Give it a real task — fix a bug, build a page, summarise a folder of notes — and watch how it works through it. Want more speed? Swap in the Highspeed model:

hermes chat --provider kimi-coding --model kimi-k3.1-pro-highspeed

Highspeed is two to three times faster but costs double: $4 in and $20 out per million tokens. I use the normal model for long background jobs and Highspeed when I’m sitting there waiting.

Step 4: Control your token bill with reasoning effort

This is the setting most people miss. Kimi K3.1 Pro always thinks before it answers. You can’t switch thinking off, but you can choose how hard it thinks: low, high or max.

Setting What happens Use it for
Hermes default (medium) Hermes sends medium if you don’t set anything Everyday tasks
high More thinking, more tokens Tricky bugs, planning
max Kimi’s own default; about 3× the tokens of medium The hardest jobs only
low Fastest replies Quick edits, chat

To set it for every session, run this inside Hermes:

/reasoning high --global

Hermes saves that, so you don’t have to set it again. My advice: start on medium, and only move up when the model gets stuck. Max can triple your token use on the same task.

Step 5: Make Kimi your default or save it as a profile

If you want Kimi every time, set it as the default model:

hermes config set model.provider kimi-coding
hermes config set model.default kimi-k3.1-pro

I prefer profiles. A profile is a separate Hermes setup with its own model, memory and skills. Make a coding profile that runs on Kimi:

hermes profile create coder
coder setup
coder chat

Now typing coder chat starts your Kimi coding agent, while your main Hermes keeps its own model and memory. You can also add short names in model.aliases so switching models mid-chat is quicker.

Good jobs for Kimi K3.1 Pro in Hermes

  • Long coding sessions: Moonshot’s internal long-horizon coding score rose from 55.95 on K3 to 61.2.
  • Documents and spreadsheets: OfficeQA Pro v2 is 64.4 and Frontier Finance is 58.6.
  • 3D and game builds: it works with Three.js, Unity, Unreal and Godot.
  • Scheduled research: pair it with a Hermes cron job for a daily summary.

One thing to skip for now: Kimi’s built-in web search tool. Moonshot says it’s being updated and isn’t recommended for production yet. Use Hermes’s own search tools instead.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Fix
Model not found Check you’ve topped up at least $1 and typed kimi-k3.1-pro exactly
Auth error Make sure the key is in ~/.hermes/.env as KIMI_API_KEY, then restart Hermes
Slow replies Lower reasoning effort or switch to kimi-k3.1-pro-highspeed
Bill higher than expected You’re probably on max effort; set /reasoning high –global or leave it on medium
Temperature errors Leave temperature and top_p out; Moonshot fixes them for this model

Kimi K3.1 Pro or Highspeed?

Both are the same model. The only difference is speed and price. Highspeed runs two to three times faster at double the cost. For overnight cron jobs and long background work, the normal model is the smarter pick. For live coding where you’re watching every step, Highspeed can be worth the extra spend.

My verdict on Kimi K3.1 Pro in Hermes

A Kimi K3.1 Pro Hermes setup takes five minutes and gives you a near-Opus agent for a fraction of the price. Put the key in .env, run one command, keep reasoning effort sensible and save it as a profile. If you want a strong, low-cost model running your Hermes jobs, Kimi K3.1 Pro in Hermes is the setup I’d start with.
