Hermes Agent vs Claude Code: Always-On Agent or Coding Agent?
Hermes Agent vs Claude Code compares two different kinds of agent. Claude Code is Anthropic’s agentic coding tool — superb at building software. Hermes Agent is a free, always-on agent that remembers you, runs scheduled jobs and lives in your chat apps. In the video below I cover how Claude Code changed the agent game. Here’s how they differ and why I use both.
Key takeaways
Claude Code is the better coder.
Hermes is the better always-on operator: memory, cron, messaging.
Claude Code needs a Claude plan or API; Hermes is free.
Use Claude Code to build, Hermes to run.

Using them together
My favourite pattern: Claude Code builds the automation, Hermes runs it. Claude Code writes a script that pulls Search Console data and drafts a report; Hermes schedules it every Monday and sends it to Telegram. You can also give Hermes Claude as its brain through Anthropic or the subscription plugin — just check Anthropic’s terms.
Hermes itself is free; you can run it on free models from Nous Portal or OpenCode, or locally. Claude Code requires a Claude subscription or API usage, which is worth it if you code a lot. Many people pay for Claude for coding and run Hermes on free models for everything else.
A real example: build with Claude Code, run with Hermes
Last month I needed a weekly SEO report. I asked Claude Code to write the script: pull Search Console data, compare it with last week and highlight pages that were rising or falling. It built and tested the script in one session. Then I gave the script to Hermes, which runs it every Monday on my VPS and sends the summary to Telegram. Claude Code did the building in minutes; Hermes does the running forever.
Speed and quality
Claude Code, with Claude’s best models, produces some of the highest-quality code of any agent, especially on large or complex projects. Hermes can code too, and it’s fast on everyday scripting with the right model, but it isn’t trying to be the best pure coder. If a task is mostly about writing great code, give it to Claude Code; if it’s mostly about doing something regularly, give it to Hermes.
Who should pick which
Developers and technical founders who mainly build software should start with Claude Code. Business owners, marketers and creators who want work done automatically should start with Hermes. Anyone doing both will get the most value from using them together, ideally in one Agent OS so you can see everything in one place.
Best choice by type of user
Business owners: Hermes first, for daily automation; bring in Claude Code when you need something built.
Developers: Claude Code first, then Hermes to schedule and monitor your scripts.
Creators: Hermes for content workflows like turning videos into posts, Claude Code for building tools around them.
Agencies: both, with Hermes running client reports and Claude Code building internal tools.
Whichever you choose, start with one real job, keep approvals on for anything risky, and expand once it’s working reliably. The best agent is the one you actually use every day, and the fastest way to find it is to test it on your own work rather than reading feature lists.
Getting started
If you’re new to both, install Hermes Desktop and complete the setup chat, then give it one daily job. When you have something to build, open Claude Code in the folder for that project and describe what you want. Keep the two roles separate at first: Claude Code builds, Hermes runs. Once that feels natural, connect Claude as one of Hermes’ models for the jobs that need its quality.
The bottom line on Hermes Agent vs Claude Code
In Hermes Agent vs Claude Code, Claude Code is the builder and Hermes is the operator. Use both and you get the best of each.
If you only remember one thing, make it this: Claude Code is where you build, and Hermes is where your work keeps running. Keep that split, route models sensibly, and you’ll get the best of both without paying for more than you need. And because Hermes can use Claude as its brain, you never have to give up Claude’s quality for the jobs that deserve it.
