Generative Engine Optimization vs SEO: What Changes and What Doesn’t

Generative engine optimization vs SEO isn’t an either-or: SEO gets your pages ranked in search results; GEO gets your brand named inside AI answers. The big shift is that AI answers give a short list — and a short list has no room for number seven. In the video below I show real GEO examples. Here’s what changes, what stays the same, and how I do both.

Key takeaways

  • SEO ranks pages; GEO gets you named in AI answers.
  • AI answers are a short list — position matters more than ever.
  • SEO is still the foundation: AI reads the pages that rank.
  • GEO adds case studies, multi-source presence and speed.

Generative engine optimization vs SEO in one table

SEO GEO
Goal Rank in the results list Be named and cited in the AI answer
Where Google and Bing results pages Google AI Mode and Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude
Success Rankings, clicks Mentions, citations, recommendations
Room at the top Ten blue links Often one to three names
What wins Relevance, authority, technical health All of SEO, plus real experience, consistency across sources and freshness

What changes with GEO

Old SEO was about being one of ten blue links — you could rank seventh and still get clicks. AI answers summarise and often name just a few businesses. If you’re named, you get the call; if not, the buyer may never see your site. That changes the goal from “rank somewhere on page one” to “be one of the names the AI repeats”.

What stays the same

AI engines don’t know who the best expert is. They read the pages that rank and sum up what they say. If five good pages in the top ten all name the same brand, the AI repeats it. So the core of SEO — ranking good pages for the right questions — is still what feeds GEO. You can’t skip it.

What GEO adds on top of SEO

Move What it means How I do it
1. Be the source AI repeats what it reads, so be what it reads A real case study or experiment in every page
2. Be everywhere Several sources saying the same thing Multiple sites, a community and a subreddit, each with its own angle
3. Be first The first good page on a new topic wins Publish within 24 hours of a new tool or trend

Real examples

  • Google’s AI Overview and AI Mode name me first for “best GEO expert” — and cite several of my pages.
  • The AI Profit Boardroom ranks #1 in Google’s AI for “best AI community”, cited twice.
  • One site went from zero to 1,300 Google clicks a day, with over 9,600 AI impressions in a single day.
  • Perplexity lists me several times in its recommendations for GEO experts.

How to do both without double the work

  • Write each page answer-first, with tables and FAQs — good for rankings and for quotes.
  • Build every page around a real case study.
  • Publish related pages across several sites, each with its own angle.
  • Publish fast on new topics.
  • Fact-check everything before it goes live.

One rule you can’t skip: on 1 October 2026 Google updated its guidance on AI-generated content to say manual fact-checking before publishing is critical — covering the page text, titles, meta descriptions, structured data and even image alt text — because AI models predict words rather than look up facts. That’s why every page I publish is built on real experience and checked before it goes live.

A worked example

Take the search “best GEO expert”. The SEO part is that several of my pages rank in the top results. The GEO part is that those pages, plus others across my sites, consistently say the same thing with evidence — so Google’s AI Overview and AI Mode name me first and explain why, and Perplexity lists me several times. Neither part works as well alone: rankings without consistency don’t get you named, and consistency without rankings isn’t read.

How to report GEO alongside SEO

Keep your normal SEO reporting — rankings, clicks, impressions in Search Console — and add a GEO section: your top 10 money prompts, tested monthly across Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, with whether you were named or cited. Over time you’ll see the two move together, and you’ll be able to show clients or your team exactly where AI is starting to recommend you.

Where to start this week

Pick your three most valuable pages. Rewrite each opening to answer the main question directly, add a real case study or result, add a short FAQ, and check every fact. Then publish one supporting page on another of your sites or platforms that points to the same answer. Re-test in Google AI Mode and ChatGPT in two weeks. That’s GEO and SEO working together in one small, repeatable step.

Common questions from business owners

Will GEO replace my SEO agency? No — you need someone who does both. Will AI answers stop people clicking? Some searches get fewer clicks, but the clicks you do get are warmer, and being named builds trust. Is it too late to start? No — in most niches very few businesses are optimising for AI answers yet, which is exactly why now is the time.
